Virtual Interview Etiquette: Dos and Don’ts for Video Interviews

Make a strong impression before you even log on. Explore practical tips and etiquette for virtual interviews from Acrisure to help you look professional, stay confident, and stand out on screen.

A candidate participates in a virtual interview

In today’s hiring world, virtual interviews are the norm. How you show up on screen matters just as much as what you say.

At Acrisure, many of our interviews happen over video, and we've seen firsthand how a candidate’s virtual presence can either elevate or distract from their experience.

The good news? A little preparation goes a long way! Our Talent Enablement Manager Rachel Dainelli has put together tips to help guide your interview journey.

Here are some simple dos and don’ts to help you make a great impression during your next video interview.

Virtual Interview Tips

DO: Treat Your Virtual Interview Like an In-Person Interview

Show up on time, dress professionally, and be fully present. Even though you’re at home, this is still a formal conversation. How you present yourself reflects your level of interest and readiness.

DON’T: Overlook Your Environment

Your background doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should be clean and distraction-free. Avoid clutter, movement, or anything that might pull attention away from you. A blank wall or an office setup is the perfect choice. If needed, use a neutral virtual background — just make sure it’s stable and professional.

DO: Test Your Tech in Advance

Check your internet connection, audio, camera, and interview link at least 15 minutes before your call. It’s one of the easiest ways to reduce stress and avoid preventable hiccups. Bonus: have a backup plan in case of technical issues.

DON’T: Multitask or Look Distracted

During a virtual interview, it’s easy to tell when someone’s checking emails, glancing at their phone, or switching tabs. Stay engaged by making eye contact through the camera and listening actively. Being present is one of the most respectful things you can do and helps build a connection with your interviewer and indicate that you are serious about the opportunity.

DO: Bring Your Energy

Video can flatten energy and connection, so be mindful of your tone, expressions, and enthusiasm. Smile, nod, and engage during the entirety of the virtual interview. Your presence through the screen should match the professionalism and warmth you’d bring in person.

DON’T: Forget to Follow Up

Just like an in-person interview, a thoughtful thank-you email after your virtual meeting goes a long way. This small act helps you stay in touch with the recruiting team and offers a professional way to share any last words about your interest in the position.

Final Thoughts

Virtual interviews give you the opportunity to connect from anywhere, but they also require intentional preparation. With the right preparation and these virtual interview tips, your experience, personality, and potential can shine through the screen just as well as they would in person. While these tips are a good starting point, remember that every industry and interview is different – use these tips as a guide then tailor your own approach to fit the particular role and industry for which you are applying.
