Meeting safety requirements is essential, but compliance is only the baseline. Regulations, policies and procedures establish a critical foundation for helping to protect employees and manage risk, but they cannot account for every hazard, changing condition or decision employees face on the job.
Proactive safety risk management requires organizations to go beyond meeting requirements by actively identifying, assessing, and managing workplace safety risks before they lead to an incident.
Prepared organizations often take a broad approach. They work to continually identify where considerable risk may exist, put appropriate controls in place, and learn from what is happening across their operations. When done well, safety can become part of how the organization manages risk and makes decisions.
